July 4th, Deadliest Day on MN Roads
(ABC 6 News) -- Many of you are going to be traveling to lakes or cabins for July 4th. It's important to make sure you or your friends are safe to drive after celebrating.
In the past 5 years, 19 people have died on July 4th in Minnesota alone, making it the deadliest day of the year on Minnesota roads. A major factor in those deaths, was alcohol.
It's a day we all look forward to, getting the day off and sitting in the sun, but it can also lead to a bad ending if you’re not careful.
"It's a time to have fun with the family and celebrate the fourth, but the concerns is that the 4th of July is actually the deadliest time of year," said Minnesota State Trooper John Baker.
He says drunk driving plays a major role in that. "Sixty five percent of the accidents involved, are alcohol related, so it’s important to plan ahead and have a safe and sober ride available,” he said.
Not to mention, it'll be hard to sneak past the cops. They'll be out in full force to catch people, specifically drunk drivers." We try to be as visible as possible just making sure everyone is having a safe time," said Baker.
State troopers in our area say they already have extra staff to help with DWI patrols tomorrow and through the weekend.
