(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The cards couldn't have fallen any better for Kasson-Mantorville.
Down one to Lourdes in sixth inning of the Section 1AA championship, the Komets had two runners on, including the potential game-winner, and senior Riley Donovan heading to the plate.
"One of our coaches always talks about how you hit fastball down the middle, and that's my usual approach every time," Donovan said. "Nothing changed, even though it was a big situation."
Donovan delivered with a two-run double that gave the Komets a 3-2 lead. They won the section title the next inning.
"You want competitors like him in that situation, and obviously, he stepped up and put a great swing on the ball," Komets head coach Broc Threinen said. "He's been really big for us all year in those situations."
"It was pretty awesome. I was just smiling on second base knowing that we can win this game now," Donovan said.
Quite the memory for a guy who's had to get used to the diamond, after being the star in another sport.
"He's like, 'In football, it never bothers me. I can make a mistake and get it done on the next play. In baseball, sometimes you've gotta wait three innings and swallow it.' So he has grown up a lot since his freshman and sophomore years," Threinen said.
