Give Dad a Rub for Father's Day

Looking for that perfect gift for dad this Father’s Day? Why not feed your dad this Father’s Day with something that is good for his heart?  Make your dad his own personalized dry steak rub.
 
A rub is a combination of salt, pepper, sugar, herbs and spices. These mixtures are used to flavor meat, and unlike a marinade, the dry rub will form a crust on the exterior of the meat when grilled. The salt component of the rub will help draw out the juices in the steak, which results in a moister steak. When grilled, the sugar will caramelize and form a crust to seal in all the flavor and juices. Just about any cut of meat can be rubbed before going on the grill or into the smoker.  Homemade rubs also help to control their sodium content.

Steak  Rub
Makes 100 ¼ teaspoon servings.
 
All you need:
4 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon dehydrated onion
1-1/2 teaspoons minced garlic (dried)
1-1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
1-1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
1-1/2 teaspoons dried rosemary
1-1/2 teaspoons dried fennel seeds
 
All you do:
Mix all ingredients together and apply liberally to steak, chicken or pork or vegetables.

Basic Rub
Makes 51 tsp; serving 204.
 
All you need:
2 tablespoons salt 
2 tablespoons sugar 
2 tablespoons brown sugar 
2 tablespoons ground cumin 
2 tablespoons chili powder 
2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper 
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper 
1/4 cup paprika
 
All you do:
Mix all ingredients together and apply liberally to meat, poultry or fish.

Salmon or Pork Rub
Makes 46.5 tsp; serving 186.
 
All you need:
3 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar 
3 tablespoons dried Italian seasoning 
2 tablespoons English-style dry mustard 
2 tablespoons granulated garlic 
2 tablespoons sweet paprika 
1 tablespoon ground ginger 
1 tablespoon minced dried orange peel 
2 teaspoon kosher salt 
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
 
All you do:
Mix all ingredients together and apply liberally to salmon or pork.
