Large Manure Spill in Rural Fillmore County
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A large amount of manure spilled on a dairy farm in rural Fillmore county on Sunday, after a wall on the storage pit fractured.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says they received a call from Soiney Farms between 9:00 and 10:00pm, reporting the spill. They estimate between 750,000 and one million gallons of manure spilled.
Some of that manure spilled into Donaldson creek, which is a tributary to Wisel Creek, a designated trout stream. State environmental officials say despite the spill, no dead fish have been observed.
The pit has a capacity of 2.3 million gallons, and will be emptied to it can be repaired.
Both the MPCA and Department of Natural Resources were on the scene Monday and Tuesday. They say their goal is to mitigate the spill, and spread the manure on nearby farm land.
Soiney Farms is a dairy operation with about 300 cows near Canton, Mn.
