Homes for Heroes Comes to Southeast Minnesota
(ABC 6 News) -- It's a nationwide program that gives back to those who've served our country. Now, it's in southeastern Minnesota. It's called Homes for Heroes, and it gives discounts on buying or selling a home. However, it’s not just for heroes in the military, but in all walks of life.
Chris Kennedy was thinking of putting his house on the market. "Within the next few months I'm hoping too," he said.
Then he heard of Homes for Heroes. "What it does is it allows our heroes in the community to receive discounts on the purchase of their home or the sale of their home," said Tara Johnson with the group.
Chris Kennedy is an Iraqi War veteran. Though he says his coming home wasn’t as difficult as it is for some, he appreciates the help. "It's one less struggle that they have to be concerned about. A lot of people come back and struggle with things like finance and this is something that will work for them," said Kennedy.
It takes some of that burden off of vets and active duty soldiers, but that's not all. "Medical professionals like a nurse or a doctor, also firefighters, police officers, basically anyone in our community, including teachers, that we consider to be our local heroes," said Johnson.
"I think that's great. I think there are a lot of heroes in the community that need to be recognized, " said Kennedy.
So how does it work? They can register online. Then after, for example, a home is purchased... "I agreed to give back a certain percentage of my pay check as a gift back to my clients at the end of the process," said Johnson.
Something she said, she was happy to do. "I really realized this is a great way for me to do something nice for other people. To give back to the people that make a real difference in our community," said Johnson.
"I think it’s very important. I think people are always looking for a way to give back," said Kennedy.
Any hero can apply. You can register for this online: http://www.homesforheroes.com/
