(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's always amazing to see the physical transformation someone makes when they've lost a lot of weight, by choice.
Rochester's mayor is noticing a big change himself and so are others.
"You look terrific, you look fantastic," said Mayor Ardell Brede. That's the kind of reaction he's getting from people since he's lost 60 pounds.
"I must have been really fat for people to have noticed this," said Brede.
At 295 pounds, his doctors told him he needed to drop weight to avoid becoming diabetic. Diets over the years never worked, until he started Medifast.
"He's feeling and looking fabulous," said Sandi Bode, of Medifast in Rochester.
Sandi Bode has been helping Brede through the program since November.
"It's really really simple. You do a combination of our food along with your own so either a protein and a vegetable which can be anything from steak to fish, eggs, cottage cheese and then a nice big salad or vegetable," said Bode.
Brede loved his late night-snacks, so it was tough at first to quit that habit.
"At first it was the cravings the pizza, popcorn, going to a movie and not having popcorn when you can smell it," said Brede.
Now he says he's eating five times a day but smaller portions, ditching soda and drinking water instead.
He even lost weight while on a Disney cruise.
60 pounds gone and he can walk up the stairs easier. But he's not done yet. Brede says he can lose more. He's even got a new nickname for himself.
"Lean and mean mayor, not the fat mayor," said Brede.
Up until this point, Brede hasn't had to exercise, but he's being advised to start. He says he's lost some of his old cravings for the late-night snacks.
One of the toughest things about the program he says is having to drink 8 glasses of water a day.
