(ABC 6 NEWS) -- After two seasons of coming oh-so-close, the Mayo boys hockey team finally captured the Big 9 title last week.
"It was kind of a weight off our chest," Spartans senior Will Holtan said.
And the seven Mayo seniors can finally breath a sigh of relief.
"It's about time," senior Adam Alcott said. "Last year, Century took it from us; two years ago, Albert Lea took it from us; this year, we got it done."
Alcott has been instrumental in the team's success, leading them in points this year with 35.
"He has a really good sense for the game," Holtan said. "He's a good playmaker; he makes plays when he needs to and he's just smart overall."
He told me it helps that he's played with the same guys - linemates Ryan Martin and Max Whitney - for a number of years.
"I like to have the puck and I like to move it around to my teammates. I have incredible linemates who make it really easy on me and probably make me look pretty good," Alcott said. "I couldn't ask for any better. They make me look good."
