Man Gets Christmas Wish, To Have a Home
(ABC 6 News) -- It's been nearly two years since the town of Hammond was nearly destroyed by flood waters. Some residents have yet to get back into their homes, but sometimes, Christmas wishes come true.
"About two years ago we had the flood," said Beau Mischke. He was one of the many to lose their homes in Hammond that fall. "Where do I go next? What do I do next? I mean, where am I going to live?" Mischke looked back.
"He had a home that had to be demolished," said Dennis Kieffer with the company Homes of Harmony.
Since then, Mischke has been trying to rebuild a home that's hard to replace. "It's kind of my childhood home. I grew up in in it," he said.
However, the group Homes of Harmony was determined to try. "We've been working with Beau for probably over a year," said Kieffer. They've been working hard to get it done so Mischke can fulfill a simple wish, to finally be home for Christmas. "Christmas is around the corner and I'll be home, after two years of bouncing from house to house, living with my friends, my parents," said Mischke.
"We're working steady on it," said Kieffer while the house was being built. With that determination, they pulled it off. Mischke was able to move in this past weekend.
"Very exciting. It probably won’t hit me until two, three days later. I’ll wake up in bed and go, ‘oh… I'm home,’" smiled Mischke. He says all that's left to the home are the finishing touches.
