Nation Pauses to Remember Sandy Hook Victims
(ABC 6 NEWS) -- On this one week anniversary since the Sandy Hook shooting, many across the country honored the victims.
There were several ceremonies locally, ones at Mayo Clinic and Assisi Heights were emotional, taking time to reflect on the innocent lives lost.
At 9:30 Friday morning, bells rang out in Newtown, Connecticut, once for each of the victims killed at Sandy Hook. The same was true across the country, as many paused to reflect on the lives lost just one week ago. In Rochester, ceremonies were held at Mayo Clinic and Assisi Heights.
"Our hearts are filled with grief too heavy to bare alone, the death of these children and their teachers, gifts of your creation, has left us all with broken hearts,” said the woman leading the ceremony at Methodist Chapel.
For each of the victims, a bell ring and the lighting of a candle. At the Plummer Building, the bells of the Carillon ringing, the hands of the performers playing a song in memory of the innocent lives lost.
The mood somber, with many wiping away tears.
"We remember their lives, the way they were before their loved ones died. And how they yearned for those moments. When all was well when they looked toward the future growth together. We remember them,” said the woman leading the ceremony at Assisi Heights.
Both of the ceremonies lit a candle for the shooter, Adam Lanza, candles surrounded a tree in the Gonda Building at the Mayo Clinic so both employees and visitors could take time to reflect.
