(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "It was kind of an electric atmosphere," Southland boys basketball coach Jon Thalberg said.
There was a sense of urgency in Mike Goergen's game last Friday night.
"I felt like I needed to do it in front of everybody - all my family and friends - so I just wanted to get it done here," Goergen said.
With five minutes left in the first half of Southland's season opener, Goergen knocked down a jumper in the lane, giving him 20 points in the game and the school's all-time scoring record.
"It's exciting," Goergen said. "Just to get my name on the wall over there and have it be the top one is just humbling."
And if you ask around, no one deserved it more than Mike.
"He's just an all-around good person, so I'm happy for him because of that," Thalberg said.
Goergen is also a football star, who had to sit out his entire senior season because of an elbow injury, making this final basketball season even more bittersweet.
"I think when I missed the (football) season, it just made me step back and take a look at the big picture, and how much fun it really is. Right now, I'm just enjoying my time, because I know where my future's going to be," Goergen said.
And the best part? It's just the start.
"He still has a whole season to go," Thalberg said.
