Investigative File: Anoka Basketball Coach Defends Tweets
KSTP obtained the investigative file on Anoka girls' head basketball coach James Fassett. The file shows Coach Fassett was suspended for two days without pay in October for sending non-school related Twitter messages to a female student.
In the file, Coach Fassett does not deny sending the Tweets, but says they were not meant to be sexually suggestive. In one Twitter message, Coach Fassett says to the girl "do you need me to assign someone to butter your muffin?" The coach says it was not intended to be sexual.
Fassett asserts he was quoting a line from the movie "Mean Girls."
In another Tweet, Coach Fassett says "Timberwolves game Saturday." Fassett tells school officials his son asked the 15-year-old girl to the game and he was simply following up on the invitation to see if she was going to the game with his son. He insists he was not asking her to the game himself. The district did not determine what actually happened in the investigative file.
The mother of the teenage girl is upset that the Anoka-Hennepin School District did not do more to punish Fassett. She tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she does not think it is fair the coach keeps his job while her daughter now has to move to a new high school.
In its investigative file, Anoka High School officials question Coach Fassett's credibility and they said his actions violated district policy and called his conduct "highly inappropriate and unprofessional. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS asked Coach Fassett for an interview several times, but he has declined.
