Mower County Red Kettle Drive Kicks Off

(ABC 6 News) -- Mower County's red kettle drive, put on by the Salvation Army, kicked off today after a successful 2011 holiday season.

Last years goal was $125,000 and they exceeded it by raising $139,000. This year, the goal is even higher at $150,000.

A new challenge planned for this season is the Vikings-Packers challenge where some buckets will be painted purple while others are green.

Another challenge will pit the Austin Police Department and Austin Fire Department against each other.

Austin will have 9 locations this year. There will be buckets at both Walmart doors, both Hy-vee doors, Shopko, Walgreens, Sterling, Jim's Supervalu and Great Clips.

The Salvation Army says they are short volunteers and are looking for more bell ringers.
