Firefighters Deliver Pizza And A Safety Check
(ABC 6 News) -- National Fire Prevention Week is in full effect and on Friday afternoon Albert Lea firefighters tried a new tactic to make sure people's homes are safe.
When Albert Lea resident, Lisa Studier, ordered pizza from Domino’s, she was pleasantly surprised when they called back.
"Domino’s called me back and asked if they- if I would mind if the firemen came and checked the smoke alarms and I said sure that'd be fine," says Studier.
"I have a couple of firefighters if you'll let them check your smoke detectors. If they work the pizza is free. If they don't work, we'll put batteries in, and replace them," said Albert Lea Fire Captain, Scott Hanna, as he spoke with Studier at her front door.
He and three other firefighters checked the alarms throughout her home. Unfortunately, she didn't qualify for free pizza but she's not disappointed.
"I'm glad just that we found out that one isn't working and we're getting it fixed now," says Studier.
"It really protects the most important thing in the world which is your life and the life of your family," says Hanna. "It's the cheapest insurance you can possibly get and it's going to give you the fastest notification to get out."
This is the first year Domino’s has partnered with the Albert Lea Fire Department, and Hanna says he hopes it's not the last.
"It's just an excellent opportunity for people to either get a free pizza, get supper for free, or make sure their smoke detectors are working," says Hanna.
The National Fire Prevention Association has done this campaign in other cities across the country.
