Frank Lloyd Wright Home May Become Guest House
(ABC 6 News) -- Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts gathered in Mason City this evening to celebrate the legendary architect. They've also been making trips to other towns which feature homes he's designed, including Austin. A home you may soon be able to stay in.
"We were today up in Austin, Minnesota and up in Owatonna, Minnesota looking at other Prairie style architecture," said Tim Quigley with the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy. He and others have been traveling from all over to see this Austin house. "A little known Frank Lloyd Wright house from the 1950's that's really a splendid house," said Quigley.
It's called the Elam House. The only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Austin, and 1 of 13 across the state. "The intriguing thing is that it's a Midwestern home-grown product," said Quigley.
It’s known for its’ size, and..."all the glass, and it brings the outside in very nicely," said owner of the home Peter Plunkett. "For most of my life, I've lived in this house," he said. However, now he hopes to share this hidden treasure with the public by turning it into a "guest house."
"I think it's an opportunity that I want to share with people who are interested in Frank Lloyd Wright architecture," said Plunkett.
Austin's City Planning Commission voted this week to allow the plan to move forward. "What I'm hoping for, is to have this develop more tourism for the City of Austin," said Plunkett.
Though we're told, not everyone in the neighborhood is on board with the plan. However, what people do agree on is that it's a home that should be admired. "It's really cool architecture, that's first and foremost," said Quigley.
Those opposed to the "guest house" still have time to voice their concerns. City council will make the final decision.
