New Mower Co. Humane Society Groundbreaking

(ABC 6 News) -- A big day for the Mower County Humane Society, the first step in building their new facility. That'll be located off of 218 in Austin, just south of the airport.

This is something those with the human society say they have been waiting for, for years and now it's a reality. Those with the humane society, contractors, and many more gathered for the groundbreaking for the much bigger facility.

The president of the human society says the space has been needed for some time.

He says animals have been doubling up on cages because there's just not enough room. Though they've needed a new facility for a while, they just started campaigning for the new building last year and from there, help was quick.

"It's exciting to have a new facility, it's really exciting to see the way the whole community's come together and helped with it and it’s really a local effort. We're a local organization, all the money has been donated locally, and we are using all local contractors to do the job," said Mower County Humane Society President Jay Lutz.

They have got a long way to go, but say they hope to be moved in before winter.
