Email to a FriendWWII Vet Celebrates 100th Birthday
(ABC 6 News) -- Monday night we support our heroes honoring a World War Two Veteran in Ostrander. He's celebrating a century of living turning 100 years old.
"Ever since the day I met him, he said he is going to be 100. Now he says he's going to be 120," laughed daughter-in-law Carol Mount. It's a birthday Walter Mount says feels like any other. “The feeling is no different," laughed Walter.
Though reaching that milestone is something we can all admire. "He has I think about 30 great grandchildren," said Carol. A century full of stories, and no doubt, Mount has a story to share.
"It was a long time ago," said Walter. Looking back to when he was drafted for World War Two. Tough to remember it all, but Carol says it's a story she'll never forget. “It was his job, and his job his in the squadron to keep the entire air crew up in the sky if the planes running. So he had a very important job," she said.
A job he carried with him for years, “I worked on aircrafts all the time," said Walter. However, his favorite thing to do was get behind the cockpit. He's flown nearly his entire life, even flying a plane last year on his 99th birthday. A short time before that, he went to Washington as part of The Honor Flight.
"I asked him, I said, 'Dad, what was the best part of the honor flight? Was it the flight? Was it the mail you got on the plane?...' and he said nope, it was the welcome home," said Carol. Walter says it was the welcome home he never got years ago, but boy is he honored now, and his family couldn't be more proud.
Mount spent most of his life living outside Stewartville, and as you can imagine, he earned a living as a plane mechanic.
