Email to a FriendLocal Farmer Grows Pink Pumpkins for Breast Cancer Awareness
They're not the the bright orange pumpkins popping from the fields this year. But, if you look closely, you can see a pink color to the pumpkins.
Farmer Bert Bouwman planted them for a reason. He says the concept started by accident several years ago, a farmer spotted the light pink color, and worked with it for five years to develop the porcelain doll.
"In the spring when I ordered the seed it was a leap of faith, hoping I can raise that many and sell that many, so we'll see."
Bouwman should have up to 30,000 pink pumpkins, he says sales so far are going well. Local grocery stores like Lunds & Byerly's and Kowalski's are selling them, and some are already asking for more. A certain percentage of the sales will go directly to fund breast cancer research.
