(ABC 6 News) -- Every Wednesday during the school year we feature a teacher who is making a positive impact on our students. Our first Excellent Educator of the year is Deb Cook from Sumner Elementary in Austin.
Cook teaches 3rd grade. Sumner runs on a new calendar but Ms. Cook's class didn't miss a beat.
"The students retained information from 2nd to 3rd grade so the retention of the skills has proven to be for Sumner, the right choice," Cook said.
Outside of the classroom, Ms. Cook goes the extra mile and makes a point of visiting each student and their families at home to build a stronger environment for learning.
"If they walk out of the school day believing they've had success then I've had a successful day," Cook said.
We'll continue to feature excellent educators every Wednesday for the rest of the school year.
