(ABC 6 News) -- Throughout the Olympics, we've seen U.S. gymnasts take home medal after medal. But just how hard is the sport? Its the focus in this week's Get Fit on Six, our own Kenny King, Melanie Bloom and Chris Kuball decided to give it a whirl.
The benefits to gymnastics are real. Added flexibility, improved body strength and muscle power
gymnasts have some of the best coordination which can also improve other sports.
It also fun if done the right way. So Kenny, Mel and Chris kicked off the shoes and hit the gym for our own morning show Olympics.
"You'll find that the surfaces in the gymnastics center are bouncy, soft, hard and in different increments," said Guy Knepper the gymnastics director of the Austin Y.
Which require some getting use to. Something these kids have already mastered. There is a real safety concern with gymnastics too.
First, stretching, "Preventing injury, getting the body warmed up and loosened up. Arms up all the way around, feet together," said Knepper.
Getting limber to twist, extend and fold our bodies. After a lot of stretching Kenny, Mel and Chris are ready to go for gold. We start with the basics, summersaults, cartwheels, and handstands. Prepping us for more complex stunts like the hand spring back flip
Melanie took to the balance beam and performed flawlessly. Kenny and Chris, something a little more challenging the, high bar.
For the morning show Olympics, their scores, not good.
