Congo protesters decry UN concern over army abuse
(AP) GOMA, Congo - A protest leader says 200 demonstrators marched to a United Nations base in eastern Congo to demonstrate against Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon statement expressing concern over alleged rights abuses committed by the military.
Serge Sivya said the protesters, who on Friday carried placards saying "The UN is mocking us" and "Let our armed forces do their job," were angered by Ban’s statement of concern that soldiers were desecrating rebel corpses.
The statement was issued after fighting broke out between the army and M23 rebels.
The same demonstrators took to the streets earlier in the week to protest a decision by the government to halt apparently successful military operations north of Goma, which fell to the rebels last November.
The area around Goma fell quiet Thursday after four days of heavy fighting.
