Guinea vote results uphold ruling party victory
(AP) CONAKRY, Guinea - A judicial official with Guinea’s supreme court has issued final results from the country’s divisive legislative election.
Mamadou Sima Sylla’s announcement late Friday reaffirms the victory by the president’s governing party, which now holds 53 of the 114 seats in parliament.
The party of opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo has taken 37 legislative seats, and the rest of the seats are divided among several smaller opposition parties.
The Sept. 28 poll marked the first time in more than a decade that Guineans had cast ballots in a legislative election. Disputes over how the vote would be organized had led to deadly demonstrations even before voters headed to the polls.
While the ruling party and opposition both accused each other of vote tampering, the legislative election ultimately did not spark widespread violence as feared.
