Jim is a Minnesota native through & through. He grew up in the Twin Cities suburb of Fridley, where his love of weather began at the young age of three, when a tornado struck a nearby nature center.

“My mom told all of us kids the weatherman said a storm is coming, and we have to get inside to safety. I’ll always remember how quick the weather went from a sunny & hot day, to a pretty intense storm. Believe it or not, growing up, I was always afraid of the weather. My father taught me not to be. He would always tell me everything will be ok. We’d watch the clouds & lightning once the storms had passed.”

Jim graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2006 with a B.S. Degree in Meteorology. He then interned at KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities, before landing his first on air job as the Weekend Meteorologist at KEVN-TV in Rapid City, SD. He started his career as a Meteorologist here at ABC 6 News, in October 2011.

In April of 2016, he earned the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation, a professional recognition of the quality of his weather broadcasts.

When he's not forecasting, Jim enjoys spending time with his wife (and high school sweetheart), their son Andrew, & their dog Oliver, as well as the rest of his family and friends. Jim is an avid fan of camping, fishing, boating, biking, and anything else that has to do with the outdoors. He’s also a big hockey and baseball fan, cheering on the Wild, the SCSU Huskies, and Twins.

You can catch Jim's forecast every Saturday at 6 & 10 and Sunday at 5:30 & 10. If you have a weather question, feel free to email him: jpeterson@kaaltv.com
